Chronic Kidney Stones Treatment

How to Pass Chronic Kidney Stones

Kidney stones develop from tiny mineral crystals that cluster together to form a solid mass.  An individual may either have one or multiple stones in the kidney at the same time.  During stone formation, the person will not have the slightest indication of its existence.  It is only when the stones dislodge from the kidney and move through the ureters to enter the urinary bladder, will the individual experience pain.  Excruciating pain often results from the movement of large stones that rub against the inner walls of the urinary tract while trying to pass through.

A person who fails to meet the body’s fluid requirement, and is constantly in a state of dehydration, has a higher risk of developing kidney stones.  Decreased urine volume leads to crowding of mineral matters in less water, and this becomes favorable for the mineral salts to attach themselves to each other and form tiny crystals.  These crystals eventually grow further and become a solid mass.  When a person passes a kidney stone, there remains a possibility for them to pass a couple more during their lifetime; more so if remedial measures are not put in place.  However, in some individuals stones get developed always.  These people develop stones within a six to twelve hour window that are eliminated out of their system after may be a couple of days or even weeks.  So for them, pain from the kidney stones is continually occurring.

Most stones formed in the kidney have a metabolic reason.  The exact mechanism behind the stone formation should first be identified.  Kidney stones are of various kinds, namely uric acid, cystine, struvite, and calcium with calcium oxalate being the most common of all.  Hence, excess calcium levels in urine could be due to an underlying disease condition that causes excess calcium excretion into the bloodstream, calcium separation from bones, or it could even arise from an increase in dietary intake of calcium.  A lot of testing will need to be done to find the cause of kidney stones.  Pain meds will help in decreasing the discomfort to a large extent, making life slightly easier to live.  Once the stone type is identified, prescriptions medicines will be administered to increase the urine’s ability to dissolve existing stones.  Normally diuretics are administered that will increase the flow of urine as well as its alkalinity.  Alkalinizing the urine is a sure way to break up stones for their easy elimination out of the system.

The underlying disease condition contributing to the development of stones will also need to be brought under control.  This will of course take some time.  Meanwhile, the individual will have to follow a method to reduce the recurrence rate.  Generally, trying to take in plenty of water will help.  Water consumption should be such that at least two liters of urine output is accomplished.  This will reduce the crystal-forming substances in urine as well as help flush out small stones from the system.  Along with water, consume plenty of citric fruit juices that will increase the level of citrates in urine.  Citrates are potent kidney stone inhibitors.  Avoid drinks like coffee, tea, carbonated and alcoholic beverages, for they tend to cause dehydration.
