Kidneys are bean shaped organs that function as a filtering device.  They remove waste materials and fluids from the blood and collect them to form urine.  Urine is therefore composed of end products of the chemical changes occurring in the body and hence rich in mineral matters and salt compounds.  Moderate quantity of water is necessary to form urine.  Water also aids in dissolving those substances found in urine that can form into crystals.  When urine produced is in a concentrated form, with less of water content and more of crystal forming substances, then the environment within the urinary tract becomes apt for stone formation.

Kidney stones can be composed of either – calcium, oxalates, phosphates, uric acid, or cystine.  Most of them occur in acidic urine, while a couple of others can form in alkaline urine.  Less urine volume cause infrequent urination and when concentrated urine is allowed to stay in the urinary tract for a long period of time continually, crystals begin to take shape.  Hence, less urine production along with high levels of calcium and oxalates cause calcium oxalate stones; highly acidic urine cause uric acid stones; increased urine acidity and cystine concentration cause cystine stones; and urinary tract infections that alkalinize urine with still increased levels of calcium cause calcium phosphate stones.

Kidney stones developed vary in size.  Some may be tiny while some can develop into really large crystals.  Often, stones formed are small in size, so tiny that they are capable of moving out of the system without needing any external interventions.  There is a possibility for the stone to get adhered to the lining of the urinary tract walls.  Dislodging them is of utmost importance to prevent them growing big in size, which will only complicate matters.  The perfect manner in which this can be accomplished is to supply the system continually with sufficient water to loosen stones and flush them out.  It is recommended that the person drink at least two to three liters of water in a 24-hour period so as to be able to produce two liters of urine per day.

High urine flow will aid in hastening the stone passage as well as prevent any further stone formation.  Diuretics will work in favor of increasing urine volume.  Often thiazide group of drugs are prescribed to aid in dissolving and passing small kidney stones.  Thiazides however can cause potassium loss and are therefore prescribed along with potassium citrates.  Citrate is another alkalizer that functions as a powerful stone inhibitor.

Relaxing specific muscles in the urinary tract will aid in increasing urine flow through narrow ducts.  This can be achieved with alpha blockers.  Prescribing alpha blockers along with diuretics will double the effect of increasing urine flow and eliminating tiny kidney stones.

Have a balanced meal, drink water in ample amounts, and exercise regularly to keep not only kidney stones, but most disease conditions at bay.
