Passing a kidney stone can physically traumatize the sufferer.  Preventing kidney stones or to try in eliminating small kidney stones is made possible by exercising strict diet control.  Excess consumption of certain food groups and lower intake of certain others can actually initiate the whole process of kidney stone formation.

Drink Lot of Water

However, for all stone types, drinking plenty of water will provide positive results.  The target should be to take in approximately three liters of fluids in a day.  This will ensure that there is regular discharge of urine in which most mineral elements and waste substances get eliminated, diminishing the chances of recurrent stone developments greatly.  Hence along with water, fruit juices, a blend of milk and seasonal fruits, vegetable soups, tender coconut water, and herbal teas can be added to meet the daily fluid requirement.

Increase Urine Flow

Fruit and vegetable drinks that contain a diuretic effect should also be consumed regularly to increase urine flow.  These natural foods will aid in releasing excess fluids from the body to produce urine, so as to increase the rate of urination.  Excess intake of diuretics can however, lead to dehydration, encouraging kidney stones.  Hence plenty of water should be consumed after taking natural diuretics, to neutralize its dehydrating effect.

Avoid Dehydration

Coffee consumption is not directly linked to kidney stone formation.  In fact, these have a diuretic effect and can actually aid in reducing one’s chances of developing stones.  So a regular cup of coffee or tea in a day need not be eliminated, but because of their diuretic effect, they can cause dehydration which is associated with stone formation.  Hence, taking in several glasses of water after one’s daily cuppa is recommended.

Increase urine acidity

Stones can develop in both alkaline as well as acidic urine, with a variation in the stone type.  Kidney stones that develop in alkaline urine are usually the infection stones, which arise when the urinary tract gets infected.  Individuals prone to frequent episodes of urinary tract infections will have an increased risk of developing multiple stones at a time.  The plan of action will be to eradicate bacteria causing the infection completely, and this can be realized by converting alkaline urine, in which usually bacteria flourish, to acidic urine.  , plums, prunes, and high consumption of starches obtained from whole grains will increase urine acidity, which will succeed in destroying the bacteria.Read about Methods to Dissolve Small Kidney Stones.

Balance Calcium Intake

When dietary calcium intake is low and high in oxalate rich foods, like spinach, beets, okra, eggplant, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, almost all beans and berry varieties, peanuts, and chocolates – calcium oxalate crystallization and stone formation can occur.  Lower consumption of high oxalate producing foods and maintain good dietary calcium intake.

But if calcium intake is in excess and magnesium consumption is low, this can again trigger stone formation.  Magnesium works naturally towards preventing calcium kidney stones.  Certain green leafy vegetables, fruits, bean varieties, peas, nuts, seeds, and unrefined grains are good sources of magnesium.  Exception to this list is spinach, though is considered to be magnesium rich, it is also high in oxalates, go easy on them.
